6 Things I Hate About You

I was watching TV and I came across one of those reality shows where they do the ultimate make-overs or whatever you call them. The women were discussing what men liked and the way they should appear to have a better chance of attracting men. I watched for a minute just to see the stupid things they had to say (ok, I get in to shows too easy sometimes, I admit) and see if any of it was something I looked for in a woman.

Almost everything was something I didn't give a shit about.

It got me thinking about the things women (including my girlfriend, unfortunately) do that the average, every-day man doesn't care about. Now, obviously there are men who are very strict about styles and fashions and what women are supposed to do to look pretty. They don't count. I am talking about an average man like me, some loser you'd find in the local bar or club.

Eyebrows - This is one that I deal with personally on a daily basis. My girlfriend is obsessed with her eyebrows. Of course no man is going to be attracted to thick, wild, out of control bushes on top of your eyes, but as long as they are kept in check, that's good enough. The don't need to be expertly groomed to impress us. My girlfriend will spend so much time making sure hers are absolutely perfect. I don't know how she has the patience for it.

Makeup - It seems to me, no matter how many times certain women are told, they don't understand that it is completely possible to wear too much makeup. In my not-so-expert opinion, I think it's a realistic idea that any woman could look her most beautiful with a minimal amount of makeup. Hell, some even look great without any at all. But NO ONE looks good with too much. No one. A little work on the eyes, touch up the cheeks, and that's enough. You're done.

Long Nails - This is the one item that actually makes me sick and creeps me out. Long fingernails. The worst is when they are so long that you can paint little intricate designs on them and attach jewels to them. Come on. As with makeup, natural or minimal is the way to go. Stick with nails that either stop at the fingertip or just barely grow past it. It looks much more womanly and a lot less skanky.

Nail Paint - Any color will do. I don't care if it matches your eyes, shoes, underwear, hair, whatever. Pick your favorite color or the color that suits your mood, wear whatever you want, and let's get to the restaurant before I die of starvation. In fact, none at all would be even better. I don't know about other guys, but I think it makes a woman look younger when her hands and nails are untouched.

Fake Eyelashes - I really think the only people who actually pay attention to how thick a girls eyelashes are are other girls. Eyelashes can look good with using fake ones or pouring on excessive amounts of mascara. If you don't have naturally thick eyelashes, who cares? Either be proud of what you've got or use a tiny bit of mascara and I assure you that you will be good to go.

Collagen in Lips - Just makes you look uglier. If you don't have lips that are so small you can't even see them when your mouth is closed, you don't need botox.

If you haven't noticed, there was common theme among all of the listed items: Natural/Semi-Natural is good.

They weren't kidding when they said a woman's body is a work of art. It is. Everything about it is genetically programmed to be gorgeous. It's sculpted for perfection. It is purpose built to attract men. 90% of the time, nothing about it needs to be changed. Often trying to change it diminishes how attractive it already was.

The point of this post is to tell women that you need to learn to be happy with what you've got, because more often than not, you're perfect the way you are. Media has created an image of what a woman should look like, and it is completely fake. No woman should look like what you see in magazines and TV and movies. You don't have to be super skinny, covered in makeup with objects glued to your body and bacteria injected under your skin to be beautiful. Take a look at yourself one more time. You are beautiful already.

~~Great!
It is really great to read this,
and realize just how true it is!

~~There is far more than "looks,"
and, the expectations placed upon women (and, young girls) today are downright dangerous.

~~You're on the right track, and any man with half-a-brain, would know that.

What a wonderful post, completely agree with well...all of it.

Thing is I think most men (over 75%) agree with you and yet this media portrayed image of perfection exists. Why do you think this is?

I mean, as long as they have two eyebrows I'm a happy man.

I have no idea how that image of "perfection" thrives so well. In a way, I can see it being our (men) fault. When with with our girlfriends and girl-friends and we're watching a movie with whoever the hottest actress is right now, we say "damn, she's so gorgeous."

I think, I THINK, they take that as us saying "damn, I want a woman like that."

That isn't what we mean. At least, thats not what I mean. Yeah, the actress is beautiful, but it's not what we look for. She's custom built for the movies. Nothing more.

There is a difference between media friendly beauty and real beauty, and unfortunately, most average woman think they need to be the former to be noticed.

Agree with every bit of this. Natural beauty is always the better of the two. Like you said in your post, woman are genetically coded a certain way to attract men. Curves, soft features, smooth skin. All of it is all we need.

I feel the same way you do when I see women who do the things you've listed. I am not attracted to them either. I stick to the "minimalist" approach you mentioned, and I prefer my women to be the same too. My girlfriend now barely ever wears make up. She never paints her nails. And she doesn't need to. She looks incredible without it, as do a lot of women who just don't realize it or want to believe it.

Great post. Love your blog, too.

Couldn't have said it better! Natural beauty is much better than all the fake stuff most women use to "enhance" their beauty!

Great blog!
